The first ‘original’ superhero movies…

When you think about ‘different’ and ‘original’ superhero movies a couple of titles come to mind. ‘The Dark Knight’ for its gritty and gruesome tone, ‘V for Vendetta’ and ‘The Watchmen’ for their originality, and ‘Kick-Ass’ for its unique perspective. However, I feel like one (actually, two) movie is being ignored and should definitely be talked about more.

That film is ‘Hancock’ (the other one is ‘Unbreakable’, but that’s a whole different subject).

The first big ‘original’ superhero films were ‘Unbreakable’, ‘V for Vendetta’, and ‘Batman Begins’. They came out respectively in 1999, 2005, and 2005. All of them started movements. ‘Unbreakable’ started a trend of movies that are technically about superheros, but aren’t really classified as ‘superhero movies’. ‘V for Vendetta’ and ‘Batman Begins’ started the trend of dark and serious superhero productions, like all Marvel Netflix TV shows.

And why ‘Hancock’ is amazing…

In 2008, ‘Hancock’ came out. It too started a trend, but I feel like not a lot of people are talking about it. If you think about it, ‘Hancock’ is really the first big superhero movie that counted on humor and on a ridiculous plot to stand out. My favorite superhero movies are probably ‘Kick-Ass’, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, and ‘Deadpool’. All of them do exactly that thing: they are based on a weird premise and use humor as their main marketing tool. They are all also very famous and respected. However, before them came something else, something very similar (and at the time even more original), ‘Hancock’. That film was basically the first ‘superhero’ production that counted on humor and on its ridiculous plot to make things interesting. It succeeded. And it started a revolution.

Not only that, ‘Hancock’ is overall a very decent film. The direction is fantastic and the visual effects are pretty good for 2008. The acting and casting is perfect and the characters are very interesting to follow. The cherry on top is the plot. With its profoundly ridiculous and extremely original premise, ‘Hancock’ manages to capture even those usually distant to the superhero genre.

So, if you haven’t seen ‘Hancock’ yet, do so now. If you like ‘original’ and ‘fresh’ superhero flicks, you will surely enjoy it.
