Top 10 Summer Movies of 2017

For a second consecutive year, I took part of ScreenJunkies’ challenge to guess which ten summer movies will make the most money. I did it last year and I was actually pretty accurate (didn’t win any prizes of get mentioned by ScreenJunkies though).  This year I did thorough research and spend hours mathematically graphing out which ten movies I think will make the most money this summer! (I’m lying, the making of this list took me 10 minutes.) Just to clarify, this isn’t a top ten of films I think will be the best of summer 2016, but a top 10 of movies I think will make the most money. Also, just like ScreenJunkies, I’m including films from the first weekend of May until the last weekend of August. Now, without further ado, here are my predictions!

Note: There is a special surprise for you at the end of this article. Stay tuned.

№10: ‘Dunkirk’

I debated really hard with myself on whether number ten should be ‘Dunkirk’ or ‘The Dark Tower’. I went with the former simply because I have a bad feeling about ‘The Dark Tower’ and I think it will flop. To be honest, I have a bad feeling about this production as well, but it’s a Christopher Nolan movie and people will always pay money to see those.

№9: ‘Baywatch’

‘Baywatch’ will be the hit comedy of this summer, mark my words. Firstly, the marketing for this production is genius and I’m sure that a lot of people will go and see it simply because of how good the advertisement campaign is. Also, the cast is hot. Not much of a reason, but it matters, believe me. What do you think those horny 14 year old boys are most excited to see this summer? That’s right, Alexandra Daddario running in slow motion. Plus, I’m sure a lot of people will go see ‘Baywatch’ out of pure curiosity: does is suck or is it watchable? And I have a gut feeling that it will actually be a quite good movie.

№8: ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’

You know, this trilogy has exceeded everyone’s expectations. It is truly amazing and a fine successor to the original movies. The first two parts have done really well in theaters. They are both great productions, so I’m sure ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ will live up to its predecessors. And even it is in, by some chance, bad, there is still a public for it. It’s like with ‘Spider-Man 3’. People knew it wasn’t that good because it got awful reviews, but they still went to see it because it was the final part of a beloved trilogy. And so is ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’.

№7: ‘Cars 3’

To begin with, this is a continuation of a well-established franchise and that always matters. Also, fact: kids love films about cars. ‘Cars 1’ and ‘Cars 2’ have done incredibly well in cinemas and I’m sure ‘Cars 3’ will, too. Films made for children generally sell incredibly well. Don’t forget, if it’s a movie for kids, you don’t just buy one ticket, you buy two, or even three.

№6: ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’

Many people think this will flop. I disagree. Good or not, there has always been an interest for Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I’m sure that people will go and see this simply because it has Jack Sparrow in it. Plus, it looks fresh. Unlike the fourth movie, I think this will fit in great will the overall story of the franchise and will be a fine ending for it. And even if it completely sucks, people will still go and see it, I guarantee you that.

№5: ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’

Most people watch movies simply for entertainment value. Almost everyone who goes to the cinema goes there because they want to forget their day to day worries and relax for two hours. And that’s exactly what every Transformers movie has aimed for so far and, quite honestly, succeeded. They are certainly not amazing productions, but they have high demand rate. People want to go see car/robots fight and big Michael Bay explosions. And so the public will, once again, go see a Transformers movie.

№4: ‘Wonder Woman’

Fact: people love superhero movies. Granted, DC has screwed up many times before. Thus, many are quite frankly frightened to see ‘Wonder Woman’. But mark my words, this will make a lot of money. One, I have a feeling that ‘Wonder Woman’ will be the first good DC superhero movie. Two, there has never really been a Wonder Woman movie before. Three, it’s about a female superhero.

№3: ‘Despicable Me 3’

Again, with any movie made for kids, here you are buying not one ticket, but two, or maybe even three. The Despicable Me franchise has been doing extremely well in cinemas and the third part will surely also jump the radar. Every Despicable Me film in the past has gotten great reviews and thus, a lot of attention. I see no reason why this wouldn’t be the case here. So, I’m betting that ‘Despicable Me 3’ is the summer animation hit.

№2: ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

If we can bet on one thing, it’s that Marvel will not make a bad movie. A lot of Marvel’s superhero productions are very much alike, but each of them individually is still a fantastic film. Unoriginal, yes, but after all, good. So, we can surely say that ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ will be great. Also, there is always a high demand for Marvel films and they always do extremely well. And people love Spider-Man. Plus, we know for sure that this particular Spider-Man is awesome, so I see no reason at all why this productions isn’t going to become one of the biggest hits of this summer.

P.S. I actually have a bad feeling about this movie, I really don’t know why. Hope I’m wrong.

№1: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’

Yes, this does fall into the category of summer movies.

You know that ‘unoriginal superhero movie’ I talked about above when discussing Spider-Man? Well, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ is the exact opposite of that. It’s based on by far the most original concept in the entire MCU and people are absolutely going to see it! It’s a different superhero movie that still falls into the MCU and that’s freaking hilarious. That is exactly what superhero fans are demanding today. Plus, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ is great (I saw it already), it’s gotten fantastic critic reviews, and thus more people will feel compelled to go to the nearest theater and see it. This is why I’m putting by money on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ as the number one movie to make the most money this summer.
