Top 5 Worst Movies of 2017

I’ve never done a ‘Worst of…’ list before, so this will probably be more fun for me than for you.

As I said in my ‘Top 10 Best Movies of 2017‘ ranking, 2017 was actually a pretty good film year. But as anything, it wasn’t perfect; some sh*t came out in cinemas and some of us were unfortunate enough to go and see it. Here is a list of the five films of this past year I hated the most. Note: I haven’t, nor do I intend to, see ‘The Emoji Movie’; it’s not on this list.

5. ‘Baywatch’

‘Baywatch’ was flat and offensively simple. The ‘humor’ in this production was the type of humor my 10-year-old nephew loves. The plotline was overly basic and, quite honestly, boring. The CGI was a huge turn-off, the performances were ‘meh’, and the film was generally extremely unaware of itself. ‘Baywatch’ also functioned as a sexist and stereotypical production from the 80’s, which is not something we need, neither something we want.

4. ‘Justice League’

What a disgrace this was. As I said in my comprehensive review of ‘Justice League’, this movie was the worst superhero film I’ve seen in the past 15 years. There is literally nothing enjoyable about it; there is nothing that makes sense and nothing noteworthy. It’s not even charming, it’s just ridiculous to the point where there is actually no point of this production existing except to serve as fan service for maybe 5% of fans out there.

3. ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand’

Not only is the production, as a whole, terrible, but it also has the worst acting of 2017. Cara Delevingne should stick to modeling and Dane DeHaan should open up a bakery or something: they are both terrible in this. The acting, however, is not the only issue; the plot is overly-simple, the events all seem distant from one another, and the movie is a mess tonally. It doesn’t allow you and it doesn’t genuinely want you to feel anything or get in any way emotionally invested in the story.

2. ‘Boss Baby’

Alec Baldwin, what happened?

We are in the era of ‘animation for adults’ productions. And as we see more and more fantastic animated movies that are both meaningful and well-made, sometimes something like this pops up that may make us lose fate. The annoying thing is not that ‘Boss Baby’ functions 100% as a movie for a 3-year-old because there are many films that aim exactly towards that; the problem here is that it was marketed for a larger audience. ‘Boss Baby’, however, serves as absolutely nothing to anyone above the age of five: it remains boring, simple, ridiculous, stereotypical, and an overall snooze fest.

1. ‘The Layover’

Many didn’t see this. I wasn’t so fortunate.

‘The Layover’ is the worst film of 2017. The humor is this ‘comedy’ is beyond belief: there is nothing funny about Alexandra Daddario being covered in poop and there is nothing funny about drugging your best friend. If a group of good writers came together and tried to write a script so overly-simple, so uncompleted, and so flat on purpose, they wouldn’t have managed, I’m sure. It’s a dull, boring movie that exist for no other reason than to market itself on two gorgeous women. Those women, by the way, do an awful job as their characters. ‘The Layover’ is, as a whole, the most annoying, unaware, and lazy film I’ve seen in years and definitely the worst of 2017.

I used to like Alexandra Daddario. But seeing her latest projects, I worry for her future.

By the way, the following is my actual Snap story while watching ‘The Layover’.

Having seen Baywatch, The Layover, and San Andreas, I get the impression that Alexandra Daddario is falling into that James Franco mold of wanting to be a funny character actress even though she’s in a bombshell’s body. That might seem patently false since Baywatch is something she took knowing she would be in a swimsuit the entire time, and she has the tightest of Michael Bay-style tight shirts on throughout San Andreas. But she’s not the dumb, sexy one in Baywatch; the Pamela Anderson stand-in is. She’s actually hyper-competent throughout San Andreas, and she’s the more awkward one who has to fight harder to get the man in Layover. I feel like she’s straining to be more but keeps ending up in projects built around her undeniable looks.

If true, there are better ways to do that. For example, make something with Blumhouse. Prove you can really act and arent’ just the girl who rode Woody Harrelson on True Detective. Either way, after The Layover she needs to fire her agent. I could easily see her, though, ending up on some sitcom.

Yes, I agree. There is a lot of potential in her, but the projects she chooses just don’t highlight that at all. I could see her carrying a proper film or even a supporting actress on a really good TV show. There is still a chance. She just needs to reevaluate, I think
