Top 15 Most Anticipated Films of 2018

It’s my favorite time of the year once again: writing Our Movie Life’s ‘Most Anticipated’ list! Listen, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I absolutely adore compiling this ranking. It’s really fun researching what comes out next year and I get a structured sense of what I should expect and what I should be excited about throughout 2018.

For the first time ever, I think, I didn’t have a very hard time doing this list. I know a lot of people are saying that ‘so many amazing films are to come out in 2018’, but I actually don’t have that many I’m excited about… Still though, we’ll definitely be seeing some awesome sh*t this year. Now, without further a due, here are my 15 most anticipated films of 2018!

Honorary mentions:

  • Maze Runner: The Death Cure
  • Tomb Raider
  • Pacific Rim Uprising
  • Incredibles 2
  • Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2
  • Black Panther
15. ‘Aquaman’

If this is bad, I spear to God, I will never have respect or faith in the DCEU again… I am definitely not expecting much at this point, after the absolutely disgrace that was ‘Justice League’, but Jason Momoa was one of the few enjoyable things in that production. So I don’t know, maybe they’ll fix something and actually make another decent film (the first one being ‘Wonder Woman’)? I really like Aquaman and I look forward to seeing something new with him in it.

14. ‘Ant-Man & the Wasp’

Interestingly enough, the first ‘Ant-Man’ movie is one of my favorite MCU productions. It was fresh, funny, interesting, original, and I had a blast watching it. I love Paul Rudd and I’ve been following Evangeline Lilly’s career ever since ‘Lost’. I’m hoping for something exciting with this film and if it’s half as good as the first one, I’m still sold.

13. ‘Ready Player One’

The graphics are really the thing that is fascinating me with this one. Sure, it’s something new and original and Steven Spielberg never really disappoints, but I’m most excited for seeing the actual footage of the characters in the video game. As far as I know myself, I’m either going to adore or loathe the way this production turns out. Can’t find out unless I see it though.

12. ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’

I’m one of the few people that actually liked that trailer. ‘Jurassic World’ was overrated, in my eyes, but I still appreciate the franchise and look forward to anything new they have to offer us. I’ve gotten familiar with Jessica Chastain’s work recently and I’m pumped to see her in a rather fun and entertaining movie and not something soul-crushing.

11. ‘Robin Hood’

Every time someone announces a ‘darker and grittier’ version of something we’ve seen before, I’m immediately sold and excited. I love heavier and deeper remakes of familiar tales. It hasn’t worked out very well in the past, but this is directed by Otto Bathurst, a guy who has done episodes of ‘Peaky Blinders’ and ‘Black Mirror’. I’m hoping he’ll deliver and give me something emotionally exhausting. Oh, and this has Taron Egerton. What a great actor he is!…

10. ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’

Even though I wasn’t a big fan of ‘Rogue One’, I definitely haven’t lost any excitement for the ‘Star Wars’ spin-offs. Especially this one. Hopefully, this will function as a shorter and more pimped out version of the second trilogy: still focusing on one character and their development, but in a better, far more logical, and far more interesting way. There is a lot of pressure on this one, so I hope they don’t screw it up. But truthfully, Disney hasn’t really disappointed with any ‘Star Wars’ movie so far, so my bets are this is going to be great as well.

9. ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Yes, I am aware that I’ve been bashing on the MCU for some time now. But come on, it’s ‘Infinity War’! Granted, I’ve lost interest for this movie during the past year (generally because I’m sick of the MCU), but the fact remains that this will be the beginning of the end of the biggest superhero adventure we’ve yet had. Most of my favorite superheroes in one film, a culmination, something that’s been building itself for so many years!… Can’t say I’m not excited.

8. ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’

I’m always excited for a new ‘X-Men’ film! I love the X-Men universe far more than MCU at this point. I think they always manage to keep it fresh and always give us something we are generally happy with. Plus, this new production focuses on a storyline I’ve wanted to see on screen for nearly a decade, so I am very pumped to go in and see Sansa kick some ass.

7. ‘Venom’

‘Venom’ is a fresh movie that is part of a new cinematic universe, the Spiderverse, and I freaking adore cinematic universes. One of the most intriguing comic-book characters is, indeed, Venom. A film that focuses solely on him will be extremely interesting and Tom Hardy will definitely make this character something truly amazing to observe. This is a dark antihero story with freaking Tom Hardy in the lead. Sold.

6. ‘Mowgli’

As I said for ‘Robin Hood’, I’m always sold on ‘darker and grittier’ versions of films we already know and love. Especially such that are directed by the legendary Andy Serkis. This is the first film Serkis directs that involves performance capture, so I’m absolutely sure he will give his heart and soul to this project. This man constantly manages to surprise us and is the king of performance capture, so I have extremely high expectations for ‘Mowgli’, both story-wise and visually.

5. ‘The New Mutants’

Originally, this was like number 11 on my list. Then I watched the trailer for the first time and it immediately jumped six spots. This film is exactly what I think all of these film universes, especially the MCU, are missing nowadays: complete originality and a change of genre. I’m so used to seeing big blockbusters that ultimately serve for nothing but entertainment, so I want, nay, I need, something completely fresh. So do I want a horror film with mutants in it? F*ck yeah, I do.

4. ‘First Man’

Damien Chazelle has quickly grown to be one of my favorite directors currently working in Hollywood. The guy did ‘Whiplash’, a film that got in my top 5 of 2015 list, and ‘La La Land’, which was number two on my favorite movies of 2016 list. Chazelle’s next project is something I’ve been anticipating ever since they first announced it and I’m 100% sure it’s going to be a quality production. Everything this guy makes is. Also, Ryan Gosling and Jon Bernthal are both some of the best talent Hollywood has to offer. This movie is basically a mash of my favorite creators; the excitement, thus, is high.

3. ‘Deadpool 2’

‘Deadpool’ is one of the, if not the, best ‘superhero’ production I’ve ever had the joy of seeing. Ryan Reynolds is absolutely genius as Wade Wilson and I thought the first film was as flawless as one production can get. Reynolds is even more involved with the sequel and I’m betting it’s going to be just as good and hilarious, if not more, as the first movie. And if this sequel one is even half as funny, vulgar, and bold as ‘Deadpool’, I’ll still be happy.

2. ‘Boy Erased’

This may seem as a strange choice as my second most anticipated film of 2018. There is a reasoning behind it though. The author of the book this production is based on, Gerrard Conley, is a person I know personally and respect very much. He was a teacher in my high school and he’s a really great guy. It’s awesome to see him succeed like this, especially as I’ve read the book and know the struggles and low tides he’s been though. ‘Boy Erased’ is something I look very much forward to. I mean, the film is based on a book a guy I know wrote; it’s understandable that I’m HYPED.

1. ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’

Ah, yes! My most anticipated film of 2018 is ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’! Listen, I’m a huge ‘Harry Potter’ geek and I’ll be extremely excited for anything new I get to see from that universe. I really, really liked the first ‘Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them’ and I can’t wait to see the sequel. But to be honest, even if the first one sucked, this still would have been very high up this list. Seeing anything from that universe is an absolute delight for me and I leave the theater happy. So yes, this is my most anticipated film to watch this year.

As my sister said: ‘The ‘Fantastic Beasts” movies end 2024. Thus, there is meaning to live until 2024.’
