‘Zola’ and the Power of Storytelling

Zola, directed by Janicza Bravo and starring Taylour Paige and Riley Keough, premiered at Sundance to rave reviews. The story of the film still remains relatively under wraps, but the story behind the film is out in the open.

Zola is an adaptation of a Twitter thread.

We can’t be the only ones who think that’s absolutely insane. A Twitter thread. It’s absolutely mind-boggling to realize that, in this day and age, there is a film adaptation of a viral social media story.

You can read the whole thread here. Zola, the ‘author’ and lead character in the film, has admitted to over-exaggerating some aspects, so you can read a more detailed and accurate version of the story here. In short: it’s about stripping, kidnapping, adventure, mental problems, possible suicide attempts, and many neon lights. Or in one word: Florida.

The beginning.

We take this as an opportunity to briefly talk about the power of storytelling. This woman, Zola, shared her adventure on a social media platform. And now there is a movie made about it that premiered at Sundance and is distributed by A24.

Goes to prove that, in the core of everything, is an enticing story. Not flashy lights, not a cast, not even luck – just a story. Because, at the end of the day, we watch cinema because we want to escape. To escape from this reality to a different one, a more interesting one, one that has a story to tell.

Zola is what it is simply because someone put it out there. Didn’t want a movie made, didn’t produce, they just told a story. A good one. And that’s enough.

Zola doesn’t have a premiere date yet. You can read some more reviews here.
