This week’s recommendation is…
‘John Wick’ & ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’!
This movie has been getting a lot of attention recently. The main reason for that is because, well,… it’s good. Really good.
Once again I’m going to talk about the importance of entertaining movies. In recent years, there has been a certain trend going on in Hollywood: only dramatic and deeply emotional movies are considered ‘good films’. Untrue. A ‘good film’ is one that tells a compelling story and serves its purpose. Whether that purpose is to teach a lesson, emotionally invest the viewer in the plot, or simply entertain is completely unimportant.
‘John Wick’ and ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’ both fall into the category of ‘good films’. Their main purpose is not to teach a lesson and they are not deep or psychological movies. Both films focus on primarily three things. One, to create a new and fascinating environment where the story takes place. Two, to explore and develop the character of John Wick. Three, to have amazingly choreographed, shot, and acted out action scenes. The films are absolutely perfect in all those things.
Is that enough? After all, both ‘John Wick’ and ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’ are neither complex nor very emotional productions. They don’t explore deep subjects and they do not have a specific lesson to teach the viewer. And yet, both films are absolutely fantastic because they serve their purpose. The creators of the action thrillers wanted to create movies that do exactly those three things: create a new universe, explore John Wick, and have amazing action scenes. And they have certainly succeeded.
The universe is extremely original and very interesting to watch. Chad Stahelski and David Leitch have managed to develop their world in a very smart way: you get no explanation about it, no exposition whatsoever, but you get to understand things yourself by actually following the story. I love that. When it comes to the character of John Wick, they don’t do much with him, but what they do is fantastic. You know just enough to get invested in him, but not so much that the movie becomes a character story. And the action scenes are unbelievable. Simply amazing! Literally some of the best I’ve seen in my entire life, especially in the second film. One of my biggest regrets is not watching that on a big screen. That would have been awesome.
What comes out it are two extremely entertaining and well-made films. Not dramas, not mysteries, not anything that might get an Oscar, just fantastic entertainment. Both are movies that are not only entertaining, but that are also just really good and well-made. And that is very important because a very large amount of the public goes to the cinema not to leave depressed and filled with emotionally exhausting thoughts, but to simply get entertained. And it’s extremely important that Hollywood produces well-made movies that to exactly that.
Both ‘John Wick’ and ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’ succeed to do exactly what they want to and are fantastic productions. So, if you are looking for some marvelous entertainment this weekend, I highly recommend streaming the latest Keanu Reeves action thrillers!
