Top 15 Most Anticipated Films of 2020

With 2019 at a near end, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to honor the long cinephile tradition of compiling a most anticipated of ___ year list.

Usually, these are extremely difficult for us to make because there are so many features underway we’re excited for. This year, however, was an exception to that rule; this year, we struggled. Seems 2020 might be calmer than usual.

But nevertheless, here it is.

15. Morbius

Jared Leto is Morbius.

Morbius is the new project Sony intends to release as a part of its Spider-Man spin-off universe. Starring Jared Leto and Matt Smith, this is (presumably) a gripping anti-hero tale about a vampire with superpowers. We’re excited because its an antihero story and because it seems different. We’re worried because of what Venom was.

14. Mulan

Mulan is a live-action feature based on Disney’s Mulan from 1998. It’s pretty straight-forward with this one; it’s Disney. They never really disappoint, but the sad fact is they never really take big risks either, especially with this recent wave of live-action remakes — so we’re pretty sure we know what to expect.

13. The New Mutants

Number five on our 2018 list.

Number twelve on our 2019 list.

Third time’s a charm. At this point we’re just excited to see what came out of this production problem hellhole. Here’s a link that explains what happened to The New Mutants in detail, if you’re interested.

12. The King’s Man

Kingsman: The Secret Service was amazing, but Kingsman: The Golden Circle didn’t really work that well. We’re happy to see Matthew Vaughn taking a new and exciting approach with this one; it could turn out really, really well.

11. West Side Story

Directed by Steven Spielberg.

The story is legendary and actually could, theoretically, work well in a remake. It’s also a musical directed by Steven Spielberg and that alone is something grand to look forward to.

10. A Quiet Place: Part II

John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place in 2018 was truly a breath of fresh air in a day and age of sequels, prequels, and remakes. It felt fantastic to see a quality original story written and directed in a coherent and stylized way. Now that Krasinski has somewhat found his voice and gained confidence as a director, A Quiet Place: Part II could be something extraordinary.

9. Barbie

Directed by Greta Gerwig.

Before you judge us, this is directed by Greta Gerwig. Yes; the creative mind behind Lady Bird and Little Women is teaming up with Margot Robbie for a live-action feature based on a doll.

I mean? Come on. Why would we want to see this?

8. Dune

Directed by Denis Villeneuve.

From our most controversial article about Denis Villeneuve, it becomes clear that we’re not the biggest fans of his work — and yet — he is awfully specific via style and tone. It’s always fascinating to watch one of his features; less from a consumer point of view and more from a critic one. So we’re looking forward to this next one.

7. Black Widow

For years, fans have begged for this; and Marvel finally delivers.

It’s an MCU film. And as MCU fans, that’s enough.

6. Birds of Prey: And the Fabtabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn

Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (thank God for copy and paste) is the new feature under the upcoming wave of Margot Robbie produced pseudo-DCEU films. And this seems goofy, entertaining, and flamboyant. Which is exactly what we want and need from a production like this one.

We have a feeling it’s going to be a hit or miss with this one. But we’ll wait to see. Hopes are still high.

5. Legally Blonde 3

Starring, yet again, Reese Witherspoon.

Didn’t even know this was coming out before we did our research for this article, but damn, are we happy we found out. 17 years later, Elle Woods is back.

And again, it’s going to be a hit or miss with this one, but the idea alone is enough to make us look forward.

4. Wonder Woman 1984

Wonder Woman still stands as the one and only quality DCEU film. Gal Gadot is fantastic in the role, Patty Jenkins really knows her craft, the tone was clear, the pacing was good, and the story was enticing. Keeping all that in mind, Wonder Woman 1984 should be an improvement to an already pretty solid superhero film.

3. The Eternals

Directed by Chloe Zhao.

Kevin Feige loves experimenting. He listens to fans and constantly looks for ways to bring the unexpected and exciting into the MCU.

Eternals is a way to do that. An epic superhero tale with a fascinating twist on what we’ve gotten so used to. This could be the new Guardians of the Galaxy. More info on who the Eternals are here.

2. Free Guy

Free Guy is about an NPC in a video game that finds his voice and starts playing the game. Starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by Shawn Levy, this is definitely going to have a distinct tone and story that no other feature has dared to explore. Enough to get us extremely excited.

1. Tenet

The new and most ambitious project behind the astonishing Christopher Nolan. Starring Robert Pattinson, Michael Caine, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, almost nothing has been revealed about this feature. All we know for sure is that it’s an espionage thriller with time travel involved.

It’s a new sci-fi production written and directed by Nolan. His last two were Inception and Interstellar. So yes, this is our most anticipated film of 2020. We can’t wait.

That’s it everybody. 2019 might be gone, but cinema from it sure isn’t. Our Best of 2019 list and our 3rd OurMovieLife Awards are coming sooner rather than later.

Hope you all had a wonderful 2019 and have an even better 2020. Happy New Year!
